• What is henna?
Henna is a natural brown dye made from the dried powdered leaves of lawsonia inermis (henna plant, see picture to right). It can be used to dye hair and skin(temporary tattoos).

  • How does Henna work?
Henna Tattoos are applied using a green paste made from the henna powder and a catalyst solution(various recipies). The paste drys on your skin staining the epidermis (upper layer of your skin). The tattoos take 12-24 hours to develop from a ligt orange to a full brown colour. Then it will gradually fade away as your skin naturally exfoliates over approximately 10-15 days. Duration varies from person to person due to skin type, skin condition, body location and lifestyle.

  • What colour is a Henna tattoo?
When the dry paste crumles away your tattoo will start out orange and develop into brown over 12-24 hours.

  • Can I get a black Henna tattoo?
There is no such thing as black henna. The so called black henna that you may have seen is actually hair dye which contains PPD(Para-phenylenediamine). This substance is very dangerous if used in contact with your skin. I has caused permanent scaring, burning and far more serious reactions. I would strongly advise staying away from black henna.

  • Is there a safe alternative to black Henna?
Yes there is a new product available called Jagua. This is a natural blue/black fruit based dye from South America, where it has been used by the indiginous tribes for centuries. It is available from:

  • What is the best henna to buy?
Henna is avaiable in two different forms.
    1. Already mixed into a paste, this usually comes in a sealed tube or cone and is mixed with preservatives to keep its staining properties active. These are great for people who just want to pick up a tube and have a go. But sometimes the quality is inferior and this can make it hard to work with or a poorer colour.
    2. Henna powder and a catalyst you have to mix yourself. If you can get fresh henna powder(usually quite bright green in colour) this is a good idea as the final tattoo colour should be great. This also enables you to sieve your powder if you wish to make sure it is fine and free of twigs. But do take note that once you have mixed your henna paste you should allow it to develop for at least 4 hours before you start tattooing.
    Both are available at:

  • Is it the same as the henna hair dye?
They both come from the same plant but the body art Henna is of a much higher quality.

  • How long does it last?
On average 10 – 15 days but as it’s a natural product it may have slight variations due to skin type and where it is on the body.

  • Can I make my henna tattoo last longer?
It can help if you moisturize the tattooed area.

  • Do I need to prepare the skin before application?
It can help if you exfoliate the day before and use henna oil (mahalabiya oil) just before you paint on your tattoo .

  • I applied the henna paste, it dried and crumbled off, but my henna tattoo is very light orange, why is this?
Don’t panic. Henna takes 12-24 hours to develop to its full natural brown colour.

  • Once I mix my henna paste how long will it work for?
Henna paste will be most effective in the first 24-48 hours.

  • Is it safe to use on children?
Yes it is suitable for all ages as it is a natural and safe product. However if you have sensitive skin a patch test is always adviseable

  • I am pregnant is it safe to have a Henna tattoo?
The Henna is fine to use but we recommend that you do not use the oil.

  • Where on my body will it work?
We would not recommend using henna too close to the eyes or other sensitive areas.

  • Do I need to apply lemon juice and other formulas I have heard about?
No our catalyst, oils and paste provide you with everything you need for a long lasting tattoo.

  • If I go swimming will my henna tattoo disappear?
Most swimming pools contain chlorine, which is bleach so your design may fade. We suggest covering your henna tattoo with our after care cream (try the sparkly one!).

  • If I don’t wash will it last for longer?
    No, but you might smell.

  • Will Henna stain my clothes?
Yes but only while still wet. Please be very careful when applying and waiting for you henna tattoo to dry.

  • Does it hurt?
No it’s totally pain free, and quite relaxing.

  • Where does it come from?
Henna comes from Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.

  • Can I re-apply as it starts to fade?
I would recommend giving your skin a break inbetween applications.
